Synopsis:
The life of an artist who imprinted the iconography of Hindu gods and goddesses upon a billion minds, Raja Ravi Varma’s life as an iconoclast who dared mass-produce his prints, becomes a sensuously beautiful and bold film in director Ketan Mehta's latest venture. From his early days under royal patronage to his trial for blasphemy for his increasingly eroticized work, Mehta brings to life the artist’s search for his muse, the birth of Indian modern art, the dawn of Indian cinema, and inspiring the Indian independence movement. Ketan Mehta has made10 feature films, and many of them have won national and international awards- Bhavni Bhavai won the 1981 UNESCO Club award for ‘Best Film on Human rights’ – Festival of the Three Continents, Nantes, France; Holi in 1984 won the National award for best cinematography; Mirch Masala in 1986 was awarded for Best Film at Hawaii international film festival and also won 3 National awards including Best Hindi film; Maya Memsaab in 1992 won a National special jury award and 2 Best Actress awards; Sardar in 1993, won 2 National Film awards and BAFTA awards for Best director and Best actor. The Rising – Ballad of Mangal Pandey (An Indo– British co-production), opened the Locarno Film Festival. He has also produced and directed many TV series and Documentaries.
Mr. Mehta is the promoter and Chairman of Maya Entertainment Ltd. one of India’s largest Digital Visual effects and animation facilities, which has over 50 training centers for computer animation across India. Recently he has been honored by the French Govt. with “The Officer of the Order of Arts and Literature”. |
